This year, an EducationMatters student award recipient will be selected during the fall semester for the first time. The Laurie Sommerville Scholarship Award was established to recognize students who have the potential to successfully complete post-secondary studies, but may not be able to do so due to challenging life experiences.

The summer sun may still be shining, but we’re guessing the staff and students at Marlborough School are getting pretty excited for the new school year to kick-off. With a grant from EducationMatters, Marlborough spent the past school year planning the transformation of its existing library into a modern learning commons.

Students at Forest Lawn High School are working collaboratively to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health by encouraging positive interactions that promote empathy and openness.

EducationMatters is pleased to present Ksistsikoom on June 2 and 3, 2018 at the University of Calgary’s Reeve Theatre. Grade nine students from William D. Pratt School are working with Kainai Elder Saa’ kokoto to stage an adaptation of his play Ksistikoom, which means thunder.

“The pipe trades course saved my child from being a high school dropout,” says the mother of Dean, a grade 11 student in Calgary.

On May 9, 2018, EducationMatters launched our Fuel the Future event to raise awareness and dollars to support educational enrichments for students across Calgary. The event, held at the Calgary Board of Education Centre was busy, with 128 guests, students, and volunteers in attendance.

“It whoket but the problem still was that it still whoed be hard to get our lunch kit.” This is an excerpt from an English language learner (ELL) at Belfast Elementary School, describing a possible solution to a storage issue in her classroom’s backpack and lunch kit storage area.

  Aidan Johnson is a graduate of Ernest Manning High School and in 2017 he won three student awards through EducationMatters. Currently, he is studying engineering at the University of Calgary and credits these awards with giving him the opportunity to grow as a person while in school.
